Homosexuality is not Contemporary in South Africa: The Perceptions of Traditional and Religious Leaders towards Homosexuality
Gender prejudice continues to plague the South African community. According to the article, homosexuality, and bisexuality have been prevalent in South Africa for many decades. South Africans believe that homosexuality is a new phenomenon. There is a widespread perception that homosexuals are hypocrites who seek social attention and are embraced by the black cloud of evil spirits (Satanist). Gender-based homosexual discrimination may be perpetuated by cultural perceptions, norms, and religious beliefs. The study focused on religious and traditional leaders in rural areas, where many people participate in cultural activities. The South African Commission for Gender Equality promotes gender equality as well as its protection, development, and attainment. The qualitative research method, constructivist research paradigm, semi-structured interview questions, and social-cultural theory were all used in this paper. The findings revealed traditional leaders who were concerned about same-sex marriage within cultural customs and as a social phenomenon. Meanwhile, religious leaders believed that homosexuality is morally repugnant in God's eyes. According to the study, homosexuality is a minority group. However, discrimination and homicide are acts of inhumanity and violations of their human rights.
