Abstract:

Ethics and Public Service in Africa will provide students and practitioners with a working knowledge of the basic ethical values and concepts that are useful in management of African Public Services. In easy-to-understand language, the book discusses the relevance of ethical decision-making and reflection to improve public-service delivery in Africa. Its thrust is to urge African Public Servants, and the general readership, to look into Africa's own cultural and value systems, as beacons for their day-to-day endeavours. Without relying on these pillars, the provision of vital public service will continue to be problematic, and perpetuate the already-visible institutional decay. Each chapter raises pertinent issues about moral values, in public-service management, without being pessimistic. It however warns that, without imbibing ethical norms inherent in African value systems, it will be difficult to realize productive, effective, and efficient public service. Ethics and Public Service in Africa is a fascinating and thoughtful examination of where we have been, and where we are headed, in terms of Public-service Management in Africa.
