Abstract: 

The Southern African regions is peaceful compared to the rest of Africa, but refugees from the north - driven from their homes by civil war, terrorism and ethnic cleansing - are drawn increasingly to the region for resettlement. To discuss the crises that compel refugee migrations and the situation they face in Southern Africa, ACM spoke with Ava Thancamootoo, an independent consultant who has worked with governments and international humanitarian organisations on refugee rights. She also advises asylum seekers on an individual basis.
