The AUC Library physical location:

African Union Headquarters, Roosevelt Street, New Conference Center, 3rd Floor. AU Staff members and AU Member States Embassies staff need only their badges to access the library during AU working hours. The Library is composed of a lobby, two reading rooms equipped with computers and a periodical room.

Researchers and university students need to bring supporting official letter (letter headed paper) from their respective institution together with photocopy of their valid (renewed and legible) picture ID, after which, a library card will be issued to them.

Virtually the Library is accessible at https://library.au.int, through which users can follow new developments in the library: newly purchased books, recent arrivals in periodicals, activities of the library, etc. as well as browse the library’s collection.

The AUC Library users are:

  • Staff of the AUC and AU Member States Embassies in Addis Ababa
  • Family members of Staff of the AUC and AU Member States Embassies in Addis Ababa
  • AU Partners, Researchers from within and outside Africa working on African issues

The AUC Library is open from Monday to Friday during AU working hours:
 

  • Morning: from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm
  • Afternoon: from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm

The Library is closed during weekends and holidays observed by the African Union.

Currently only staff members of the AUC and AU Member States Embassies in Addis Ababa can borrow materials from the library.
 

  • For AUC Staff, there is a one-time registration (see attached form) that needs to be filled and submitted with a copy of valid AU ID
  • For Staff of AU Member States Embassies in Addis Ababa, there is also a one-time registration (see attached form) that needs to be filled and a guarantee letter (see attached sample) that should be submitted together with a valid picture ID. The letter should be submitted in a letter headed paper of the respective embassy and bear their official seal.
  • Other users can use the AUC Library materials in-house.

Registered Users may borrow up to 4 books/periodicals at a time for a period of 15 days. If they need additional time, they can renew by calling, emailing or visiting the library.
The library has materials that cannot be borrowed at all (reference materials) and others may have shorter loan period like periodicals (magazines). Kindly inquire at one of the reference desks with Library Staff.

If a book you want to read is out on loan, you can reserve it by either visiting the library, or placing a call or sending an email with details of book to hold.

To find books/journals/ journal articles, etc held in the AUC library collection, you can search our online catalogue through our website @ https://library.au.int

The AUC Library subscribes to several electronic resources (journals and databases), which are available for AUC users only within AU premises. Users are able to access these e-resources either by using any desktop computer within the Library or AU compound or contact the library.

The Library has a section for children books and space where they can read by respecting library rules and regulations.
However, unaccompanied children below the age of 12 are not allowed into the Library.

No, users are not allowed to consume Food and Drinks in the Library.

Users can take their handbag, laptops and reading materials into the library. But, they have to leave their backpacks in the lockers provided by the entrance of the respective Reading Rooms.
