Analysing Incidents that Reverse the Promising Political Reforms in Ethiopia since 2018

Reforms are changes in policies or institutional rules of the government since the existing policies are not functioning well. Political reform incorporates changes that are characterised by political liberalisation and greater political accountability. The purpose of this article is analysing incidents that reverse the promising political reforms in Ethiopia since 2018. A qualitative approach was employed in collecting and analysing data. After the removal of Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) domination of state power by popular force, Abiy Ahmed was appointed as the Prime Minister. In his first speech to the members of the House of People's Representatives (HPR), he promised that the Ethiopian government will commit to bringing a comprehensive political reform. Among other, democracy, peace and stability, respecting human rights, and encouraging the works of the opposing political parties are the main political activities that Ethiopians need to have from the newly structured government of Abiy Ahmed. However, this investigation indicated that political instabilities and uncertainties; continuing ethnic-based attacks, and mass violation of human rights in different areas of the country are the leading incidents of the regime that hampered the expected political reforms in the country. Therefore, the government in power, in collaboration with other actors, need to instantly work to bring necessary political reforms that people have been questing for.
