Abstract:

The paper examines cooperatives as a catalyst for rural development in King Cetshwayo District. People in the rural communities of less economically developed countries (LEDCs) are faced with a variety of challenges that have detrimental effects on their daily livelihoods. Poverty, unemployment, and income inequality are among the main challenges that these countries endure. In this respect, attempts to address issues faced by rural dwellers have become essential for both developed and developing countries, and they have been largely based on cooperatives. Despite the trust and use of cooperatives in developing countries, a high number of people living in rural areas are living in poverty, are without jobs, and face the most extreme inequality. The study followed a qualitative approach and thereby used qualitative data collection and analysis tools to help achieve its objectives. Data was collected using structured interviews and focused group discussions. The study discovered that, as much as cooperatives exist, their current role has minimal impact on combating poverty, unemployment, and income inequality. Incorporating ISI traditions and ideologies into the conception of cooperatives will ensure that cooperatives thrive in a sustainable way.
