Abstract:

This book aims to provide a comprehensive account of torture in today’s world, demonstrating the multifaceted nature of the practice and assessing the prospects for change. The enterprise is especially opportune, being published in the year in which we celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Eighteen authors from ten countries have cooperated in this effort, not only in preparing their respective contributions but also by helping to finance the free distribution of copies to institutions, organizations and individuals in countries where torture is a more or less common occurrence.
