Abstract: 

In November 1988, I was a participant in Information Management Directions: The integration challenge, the fifth in a series of invitational workshops jointly sponsored by the National computer systems Laboratory of the National Institute of standards and Technology (NIST) and the association for Computing Machinery (ACM). I served on a working group investigating the integration of artificial intelligence and database technologies, and was charged with compiling a relevant bibliography classified by subject. That assignment provided an incentive for the preparation of this book. My research revealed that the literature of experts systems (ES) is voluminous, but widely dispersed. It appears in numerous formats. It is published in diverse subject-area publications - not just in computer science and information science journals. It soon became apparent that it is not really possible to study expert systems in isolation. In addition to its parent field, artificial intelligence, there are many conceptually-overlapping areas and points of intersection with a number of related fields. The scope of the research was therefore expanded to encompass these fields as well.
