Abstract:

Implementing community engagement initiatives in areas under traditional authority in South Africa remains a challenge for university-based researchers and development practitioners. They lack knowledge of the protocols, which may differ across communities. A qualitative study was conducted to understand the elements that guide respectful facilitation of community development in Tshivenda-speaking rural areas. Twelve participants from six traditional authorities and 36 from the University of Venda volunteered to participate in this study. Four reflection circles comprising cultural knowledge holders, postgraduate students and academic staff were constituted. Each reflection circle deliberated on the question, "What are the practices to comply with when facilitating development within Tshivenda-speaking communities?" Data were analysed using thematic content analysis. The four main themes identified included cultural respect and etiquette, communication and interaction, professionalism and accountability, and relationship building. These results emphasize the centrality of cultural sensitivity, communication, transparency and respect in engaging communities under traditional leadership. Thus, it is necessary for researchers and practitioners to prioritize grassroots community involvement, respect local customs and build meaningful relationships that might yield success and sustainability of development projects.
