Internet and Sexual Behaviour of Undergraduate Students in Anambra State
Internet and Sexual Behaviour of Undergraduate Students in Anambra State
This study was designed to examine how Internet sexual content exposure influences undergraduate tertiary institutions' students' sexual attitudes and behaviours in Anambra State, Nigeria. The study was necessitated by the high rate of sexual awareness and sexual activities prevalent among undergraduate students. The quantitative research methodology was adopted by the study, which used a structured questionnaire data collection technique to elicit data from the respondents. A sample of 200 undergraduate students was randomly drawn from four (4) tertiary institutions in the study area, and the questionnaire was validated through a test-retest reliability index of 0.70. Results showed that undergraduate students are very regularly on the Internet. Again, it was gathered that exposure to sexual content on the Internet affects undergraduates' attitudes and behaviour towards the opposite gender, which arouses sexual feelings towards the opposite gender. In the same vein, sexual content was found to influence students' attitudes towards premarital sex, among others. The study recommended, among other things, that institutions should introduce a spy on all their Internet sources to checkmate contents before access to undergraduates; in addition, there should be sex education from primary to tertiary levels in all schools in Nigeria.
