Abstract: 

The first mass extermination of a human population in the 20th century occurred in Southwest Africa by German military forces seeking to eradicate indigenous peoples from what is today Namibia. In June 2016, descendants of the Herero people stepped up their efforts to have the massacre defined as genocide and seek reparations.
