Abstract:

This study attempted to open a window on cultural, schooling and sport practices of an economically depressed area of Cape Town, known as Blouvlei. The narrative introduces the reader to the social-geographical location of the area by means of a literature review and the aims of the study. A historical outlay is presented that identifies historical significant names and events from the period of colonial settlement to twentieth-century suburban development with particular emphasis on the living conditions in Blouvlei. An overview of schooling history and cultural life in the Blouvlei area is provided. Finally, a survey of sport (informal and formal) and how schooling, church, politics, the natural environment and the military created avenues for exploring the sport-cultural capital in Blouvlei is examined.
