Abstract:

While rising in the ranks of State Street Corp., the author became involved in local philanthropic causes, and chose urban education as his focus. He conceptualized the process of students moving from school to college to employment as a series of transitions and hand-offs, and saw that a coordinated system would be needed to help students make these transitions successfully. He partnered with five nonprofit entities, each of which specialized in a key part of the school-to-work process: skills training, financial assistance, help with college search and applications, workplace experience, and low-income/first-generation student assistance. A testimonial by one student detailing her success story is included in the article.
