Abstract:

The article explores the Cold War context of the Tanzanian union treaty about Zanzibar sovereignty, which reiterated in the context of religious and ethnic identity politics animated by the distrust of the government. It examines debates about Tanzanian union which demonstrates how sovereignty is maintained and manipulated as the modern international order. It argues Amrit Wilson's conspirational suggestion that the union was a result of an intervention by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency.
