Abstract:

This research appealed to the Conflict Transformation Theory as a useful tool to mitigate violence in the MDC formations from its inception in 1999 to 2020. The research looked at the submissions of various theorists that contributed to the theory under study as a way to encourage non-violence in Zimbabwe's opposition politics. The research suggested that the theory under synthesis could be a very useful tool that could be used to alleviate the pervasiveness of violence in the MDC formations in Zimbabwe since its formation in 1999, to the first split in 2005, and the subsequent splits that followed until the general elections that were held in 2018. The research further investigated the post-2018 general elections and the violence that occurred mainly in urban areas associated with the MDC and offered insights into how non-violence could have saved the situation in Zimbabwe. This paper employed the Desk Research methodology that includes primary and secondary data. The result that emerged from the research shows that the incidence of intraparty and interparty violence caused by the opposition MDC formations might have been mitigated had they employed the Conflict Transformation Theory as a tool for non-violence.
