Assessment of Transformational Leadership in View of Qualities of Transformational Leadership: The Case of Awi Zone, Amhara Region, Ethiopia

Abstract: 

n view of the transformation and development plan of the country, Awi Nationality Administration Zone has developed its own transformational and development plan. Leaders and policy makers at different levels of the zone claim that there is a strong need for transformational leadership to achieve the transformation and development plan. However the level of transformational leadership qualities exhibited by leaders at different levels in the zone is a dilemma. Hence the objective of the study was to assess the level of transformational leadership qualities practiced by leaders who work at different capacities in Awi Nationality Administration Zone. Among 11 woredas of Awi Zone, Dangila town, Dangila Woreda and Fagta Lekoma woreda Administrations were selected randomly. Subordinates perception of their superiors’ leadership qualities were used to explore the state of transformational leadership practice through a multi factor leadership questionnaire distributed to 139 process owners of the selected woredas. The responses were analyzed in view of the four qualities of transformational leadership: Idealized influence, Inspirational motivation, Intellectual stimulation and Individualized consideration. The result of the study showed that the leaders of the woredas are ‘fairly often’ exercising transformational leadership qualities. The result of the study implies that though the level of transformational leadership qualities of leaders at different capacities in the zone is encouraging more effort is yet required to boost it up.
