On and about Al-Hajj Umar Taal: holy war and the Tijaniyya in West Africa.- Modern research on West African islam has shown the importance of local Arabic scholarship in the genesis of political movements centering on legal or legitimate jihâd. A synthetic survey of several recent books on the Tijaniyya brotherhood and its leading family, the Taal, sheds a meaningful light upon the dynamics of the political/scholarly network up to and over the colonial period.
