Abstract:

When Billy Graham was still an unknown local preacher, he was befriended by Charles Templeton, an extremely popular evangelist. A deep friendship grew between the two young men, and they began traveling the world to speak on God's behalf. Bombarded with post-World War II realities of suffering during their European tour, Templeton's desperation for answers spiraled into doubt and hopelessness. He turned to academia in his search for truth, allowed his faith to wither, denounced Christianity in front of his church, and eventually an outspoken atheist. Templeton' disavowal of Christianity and private mocking of Billy Graham led to public scandal and a media free-for-all Billy's ensuing ministry, and a defining moment for twentieth-century Christianity
