Changing systems of livelihood in Rural Sudan
Changing systems of livelihood in Rural Sudan
Focusing on marginalized pastoral societies living in the Savannah belt of the Sudan, the collection of essays in this volume provide a fresh insight into the political, economic and social dynamics affecting the livelihood of these nomadic and agro-pastoralist groups, the impacts of changing state policies and the developpement interventions of international agencies, and the survival strategies of these communities to adopt to the new realities of their changing environments. Based on analyses of prevalent theoretical paradigms, changing official policies and external intervention strategies, the book calls for a reconsideration of the approaches hitherto made to influence the lives of these rural societies. This book constitutes an in-depth study, spanning over three decades (1971-2002), by a leading Sudanese anthropologist who has enquires intimate knowledge of the livelihoods of pastoralist communities such as the Rufa'a al-Hoi, among whom he has lied and extensively researched. For students, researchers, policy-makers, and NGO's interest in gaining a deeper insight into the dynamics of nomadic livelihoods in rural Sudan, this book is a starting point
