Abstract:

This study undertakes a comprehensive comparative analysis of the free movement initiatives implemented within ASEAN and ECOWAS, focusing on their accomplishments, obstacles, and prospects. The historical context and goals of these policies are scrutinised, encompassing the elimination of barriers to labour, goods, and services within each regional bloc. This study delves into the socioeconomic disparities, security concerns, and institutional limitations faced by ASEAN and ECOWAS in their pursuit of facilitating intra-regional mobility. By employing the theoretical framework of complex interdependence, this study sheds light on various factors that influence the implementation and effectiveness of free movement initiatives across different regions. Furthermore, this research suggests strategies to tackle challenges and enhance the socio-economic benefits of free movement in ASEAN and ECOWAS. This comparative analysis not only deepens our understanding of regional integration endeavours in diverse geopolitical contexts but also provides policymakers with valuable insights to promote inclusive development and regional cooperation. Ultimately, the examination highlights the need for dialogue, cooperation, and policy alignment to overcome obstacles and fully realise the benefits of free movement for sustainable development and shared prosperity in ASEAN and ECOWAS.
