Corporate Wellness Programs Make us Unwell
Corporate Wellness Programs Make us Unwell
Research indicates that wellness programs generate anxiety and guilt in employees. The programs appear to make employees feel insecure about their desirability to their employers, and that by not taking active steps to improve their health put them at risk for losing their jobs. The programs create an oppressive atmosphere, in which workers perceive they are being judged according to standards that are difficult to meet. To alleviate the negative perception, employers should be realistic regarding what wellness programs can achieve, and communicate these expectations clearly. Establishing boundaries is also key. Low-tech, low-cost solutions for promoting health include providing workers with fresh air and natural light.
