Displacement and Destroyed Livelihoods : The Twin Perils of Conflict in the Lake Chad Basin : ACM Interview with Omar S. Mahmood - Interviews with Experts - Informed Insights
Of the 17 million people affected by Boko Haram's campaign of violence in the Lake Chad Basin, 10 million require humanitarian assistance, 2.4 million have been forced from their homes, 7 million people are facing emergency levels of food insecurity and at least 65,000 people are experiencing famine-like conditions. For the millions of Africans residing in the area, a vast humanitarian crisis looms but is overlooked by the international community, the UN noted in March 2017. To discuss the unfolding crisis, ACM spoke with Omar S. Mahmood, a researcher at the Institute for Security Studies, an African-based think-tank with an African focus, headquartered in Pretoria, South Africa that has offices in Cape Town, Ethiopia and Kenya. Based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Mahmood's area of expertise is Boko Haram and terrorism in Africa.
