Abstract:

Criminology is unarguably one of the "received knowledge" areas of occidental educational tradition. Presently, African scholars in the discipline are caught up in the paradox of discharging what should be regarded as 'authentic' criminology in Africa, where local ideas are accommodated and traditional criminology. Against this backdrop, this paper presents a set of arguments on what currently exists in terms of the accepted knowledge system in the teaching and learning of criminology on the continent. With the aid of secondary data sources, while acknowledging the plurality and diversity of 'criminologies, 'in this paper, the reality in terms of the dominance of occidental tradition in the discipline remains a cause for concern. This paper articulates why we should bother with colonised criminology without local content. It provided lofty ideas on how criminology should be repositioned to respond to local contexts and needs through an inclusive curriculum that projects and sustains local contents and 'our own story.'
