Abstract:

Since Martin Luther King’s assassination, American liberalism has been dying a slow death. Presidents Nixon and Reagan reworked the face of Southern Dixiecrats into patriotic and respectable Republicans defending corporate interests and the Silent Majority who resented relinquishing their political and cultural domination of their America. But because of Cold War geopolitics and the new technology of television, the Negroes, the Chicanos, Puerto Ricans and women received a few more crumbs of respect and booty out of America’s bulging cherry pie.
