The Idoma Hope Rising Union and the Politics of Patriarchy and Ethnic Honor
The article discusses the political activity of the ethnic and nationalist association the Idoma Hope Rising Union (IHRU) of Nigeria from 1945 through the 1950s, with a particular focus on the role it played in promoting ethnic and masculine honor among the Idoma people. The social conditions of the Idoma people under British colonial rule, including Idoma women's social conditions within the Idoma's patriarchal culture, are discussed.
