Abstract:

Political economy of the Brong kingdom of Gyaman.- The Brong State secures its necessary resources in various ways: a relatively light tribute levied on peasant communities to which is added the more substantial return from judicial fines. The bulk of the State income results from the surplus labour (Mehrarbeit) of the king's and chiefs' slaves. State expenditures come under four main headings: ostentatious spending, religious expenses, military outlay and the tribute paid to the Ashanti. There is no specialized "financial" service. By abolishing slavery and proscribing fines the colonial administration dealt the death blow to the whole structure.
