Abstract:

In this article, the author discusses the marginalization of Africa in the Western media, a bias conveyed due to ignorance that is “not necessarily malicious.” Information about Africa is often dealt with through the simple prism of ethnicity or tribalism. Serious errors of analysis result from these a priori. The author explains that this dilettantism is caused by financial constraints, which leads to the over-simplification of sensitive and complicated issues. Moreover, the great tradition of journalists specializing in specific issues is becoming lost. In this context, the most attractive angle prevails over the veracity and reliability of information.
