Abstract:

The zambaigos in 16th-century Spanish America.- The zambaigos, offspring of-African serves and Indian mothers, are to be distinguished from the other mixed-ancestry groups: half-caste (Spanish fathers, Indian mothers) and mulattoes (Spanish fathers, African mothers). Miscegenation between African -- be they freemen or slaves -- and Indians was subjected to particularly stringent repression for both socio-economic and cultural reasons: while the zambaigos were legally free since the abolition of Indian slavery, they were also completely estranged from Spanish-Christian ways of life. Yet, despite all legal discriminations and prohibitions, they constituted a sizable portion of the colonial population by the end of the 16th century.
