Abstract:

French Dream, published in 2005 by the francophone Moroccan poet and writer Mohamed Hmoudane, exemplifies the break with more traditional representations of exile. With a sharp sense of humour, the author draws on his own experiences and those of his two brothers in both Morocco and France, to explore the intricacies and the ambivalences of exile. Hmoudane raises existential questions related to the dilemmas and traumas associated with expatriation. The author shifts between two time registers while probing the challenges of living between two cultures. After many years in France, he continues to reflect on his previous experiences back home. This strategic endeavour helps him to embrace otherness while building a confrontation between his poetic imagination and his multifaceted world.
