Mixed Signals : Is Africa Withdrawing from International Criminal Court? - An ACM Interview With Dewa Mavhinga - Informed Insights - Interviews with Experts
The International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague on 13 November 2017 announced an investigation into Burundi's government for crimes against humanity. The autocratic Burundi government responded with outrage, and was supported by African heads of state and fellow strongmen previously courted by Burundi's ruler, Pierre Nkurunziza. However, only Burundi has actually withdrawn from the ICC. The massive Africa boycott of the court that has been promised for years has never occurred. To discuss African leaders' fraught relationship with the court of last resort that provides protection to African peoples against despotic leaders, ACM spoke with Dewa Mavhinga, the Southern Africa Director with the Africa Division at Human Rights Watch. Ms Mavhinga has more than ten years' human rights research and advocacy experience on Zimbabwe and Southern Africa.
