Natural Disasters and Humanitarian Assistance in Mozambique
Natural Disasters and Humanitarian Assistance in Mozambique
Apart from armed conflict, natural disasters have equally shown the potentials of accounting for the death and displacement of thousands of persons across Africa. Despite the early warning and numerous government efforts, natural disasters have led to thousands of deaths and property destruction in Mozambique. Relying on secondary data, this study attempts to interrogate the nature of cyclone floods, humanitarian assistance, and the problem associated with these responses in Mozambique. The lack of effective humanitarian reactions from local and international organizations stems from a mirror of challenges. And this has been made worse by the increasing insecurity via activities of insurgent groups whose horrific attacks appear to have overwhelmed the security forces. Regardless, the need for more proactive humanitarian assistance remains consistently compelling due to the country's geographical position. Greater attention needs to focus on peacebuilding, improved early warning system, provision of basic amenities, proper planning of cities, working with community heads and international organizations in humanitarian responses in disaster periods.
