Abstract:

Guido Jouret, chief digital officer at Swiss industrial firm ABB AG, notes that augmented reality helps address three key challenges: dangerous jobs, operations in remote locations, and highly complex procedures or tasks. AR will enable customers to service and repair their own machines via an off-site technician, who through AR is able to see what the customer is seeing. AR might also be integrated with virtual reality so that onshore captains may remotely check on container ships. AR can also ensure compliance with best-practices and standard operating procedures by, for example, catching a missed step. Firms looking to adopt AR should assess where it would generate optimum value, such as adding an AR component to a service that would differentiate your firm from competitors.
