POLICY RESPONSES TO POPULATION DECLINE AND AGING
The Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat is responsible for providing the international community with up-to-date and scientifically objective information on population and development. The Population Division provides guidance to the United Nations General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council and the Commission on Population and Development on population and development issues and undertakes regular studies on population levels and trends, population estimates and projections, population policies and population and development interrelationships.The Population Division organized the United Nations Expert Group Meeting on Policy Responses to Population Aging and Population Decline at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 16 to 18 October 2000. The purpose of the Meeting was to investigate the consequences of expected population decline and population aging as well as the policy responses to cope with such demographic changes. The Meeting brought together national experts from eight countries, namely, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United States of America, as well as the two regions of Europe and the European Union. The Meeting improved the Knowledge base and identified priorities for future research in order to enhance informed policy development and programme planning.
