Abstract: 

The article focuses on the Egyptian gold shortage during the rein of Saladin between 1169 and 1193. The author discusses the sources of Egypt's gold supply during the 12th century, explores the history of Nubian gold mines in the Eastern Desert, and examines the social conditions of Nubian miners in the Egyptian-Nubian Borderlands.
