Abstract:

If product innovation is not managed, the growing operational complexity creates problems for both customers and employees, and has a negative impact on a firm's bottom line. The article identifies three solutions to this problem. First, focus on product integration rather than proliferation. Examples include bundling, cross-selling, and enriching products with information. Second, ensure that product developers work closely with operational and customer-facing employees. Cross-functional teams can view end-to-end processes and target potential difficulties for employees and customers. Third, commit to a high-level vision that governs innovation. Mission statements are key in establishing priorities and making decisions about investments in infrastructure.
