Abstract:

South Africa is a democratic country founded on the philosophy of Ubuntu (African humanism) which is enshrined in its human rights-based constitution. This Ubuntu philosophy serves as the fulcrum of South African democratic identity and also as a unifying factor for all (South) Africans. This implies that (South) Africans should use it as a point of departure in their attempt to solve challenges that vex them. Xenophobia is one of those disturbing problems that cries out for (South) Africans to unite and honour their oneness by collectively uprooting this concerning issue. In recent times, many South Africans have displayed worrying tendencies of xenophobia against their fellow African brothers and sisters by evicting, displacing, and at times, killing them.|Employing a qualitative approach guided by thematic textual analysis of Mpe's Welcome to Our Hillbrow (2001), this article re-examined the scapegoating of African nationals in South as criminals and argued for the use of ubuntu as an antidote to xenophobia in South Africa. The article concludes that though the South African government condemned this dastardly behaviour, they should take a step further by establishing moral regeneration programmes which will help re-educate people on the ground about ubuntu; the deep-seated love for one another as Africans.
