Abstract:

Five strategies are presented to maximize time used in commuting to and from work that can improve one's mood and increase productivity. One is to use the time to shift one's mindset from one's role at home to one's role at work, and ease the transition by checking one's daily calendar or watching the news. Another is preparing to be productive, such as going over one's plans for the day. Another tip is to find one's 'pocket of freedom' to devote to enjoyable activities such as reading books or listening to music. Sharing the spirit, or striking up conversations with one's fellow travelers, reinforces social connections. Should reducing one's commute become necessary, rather than seeking another job or home, try working from home occasionally or working closer to home at a shared office.
