Abstract:

Commercial sex work (CSW) has become a subject of concern in most societies. Commercial sex workers are regarded as social menaces that offend cultural and social morals and values. In addition, they are seen as prominent players in the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This research explored the experiences of female sex workers (FSWs) at Ngundu Growth Point in Zimbabwe. The study endeavoured to examine the circumstances that drive women into CSW and the impact of prostitution on the well-being of FSWs. The choice of Ngundu Growth Point was predicated on the fact that it is located along the highway that connects South Africa with Zimbabwe, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo and, as a result, is a veritable money-making ground for FSWs. Methodologically; the study followed a qualitative research path that involved open-ended interviews. A total of nine participants -six sex workers and three key informants- were interviewed. The interviews were adequate for the study because the data had reached the saturation level (that is, any additional data had nothing new to add to the codes or themes already obtained from the participants). Data analysis was done using thematic analysis. It was found that sex work at Ngundu thrives due to economic hardships, high unemployment rate, and poverty. In addition, the study established that sex workers suffer at the hands of the police officials who abuse them and health professionals who discriminate against them when it comes to service delivery. They also face discrimination in the communities they live in, as well as violence and harassment from clients.
