Abstract:

The article discusses the case of Ghanaian army major Benjamin Awhaitey, who was imprisoned for conspiring to assassinate Prime Minister Kwame Nkrumah and overthrow the Convention People's Party government in 1958 plotted by Parliament Members Reginald Reynolds Amponsah and Modesto Apaloo. It looks at testimonial record of the event and the investigation of the Commission Enquiry. It argues that the case offers insight on the tensions and contradictions of democracy and state-building.
