Abstract:

Many reasons are advanced within and outside the continent for the causes of poverty and underdevelopment in Africa, such as slavery, globalisation, colonialism, neo-colonialism, etc. Many intellectuals within and outside Africa consistently posit that Africa's problems are caused by external forces. The objective of this research study is to interrogate whether Africa has designed any development policies to address the endemic poverty and underdevelopment in the region instead of relying on Western policies that may not conform to the socio-economic milieu of the region. This study is qualitative in nature and is based on secondary data sources, such as journal articles, books, disciplinary magazines, and related websites, with the intention of achieving a more objective discussion and conclusion on the topic. The results of this study show that even though African governments and policymakers have designed many indigenous development strategies to help ameliorate the high incidence of poverty and underdevelopment in the region, they have not made positive impacts as initially expected. This article concludes that for indigenous policy proposals to be more than mere platitudes, more efforts should be devoted to policy implementation.
