Sweden and National Liberation in Southern Africa: Vol. II Solidarity and Assistance 1970-1994.

This book is the second in a two-volume study on Sweden and the struggles for majority rule and national independence in Southern Africa. Published in ... with the subtitle Formation of a Popular Opinion (1950-1970), the first volume traced the background to the 1969 parliamentary decision to extend official assistance to the Southern African liberation movements. Sweden thereby became the first Western country to enter into a direct relationship with organizations that during the Cold War period elsewhere in the West were generally shunned as 'Communist' or 'terrorist'. Many drawing on unresearched official and NGO primary sources, the present text gives a detailed account of the cooperation with MPLA of Angola, FRELIMO of Mozambique, ZANU and ZAPU (Patriotic Front) of Zimbabwe, SWAPO of Namibia and ANC of South Africa, all of which eventually assumed state power in their respective countries. An introductory chapter on Sweden, PAIGC and Guinea-Bissau is also included. The study forms part of the Nordic Africa Institute research project 'National Liberation in Southern Africa: The role of the Nordic countries' Based at the institute from 1994 to 2001, Tor Sellstrom was the coordinator of the project.
