Tunisian Foreign Policy: From Carthage to the new era.
Everybody is aware of he influence of geographical environment on te foreign policy of a State. This correlation between the geography of states and their politics has given birth to a new discipline called geopolitics. As a matter of fact, a look into history enables us to see that some geographical areas have been the cradle of flourishing civilizations and the scenery of important vents with a worldwide impact and far-reaching consequences. This was the case of the Mediterranean, crossroad and birthplace of, among others, Egyptian, Greek, Carthaginian and Roman civilizations and motherland of the Holy Scriptures. Its rich heritage has profited, throughout centuries, the whole of humankind, both at the material as well as the spiritual levels. And, today, it continues to play an influential central role in international affairs, thanks to its geostrategic situation, which makes it one of the most important and frequented world trade routes. Situated at th very heart of the Mediterranean, Tunisia is by far the country of the region which has been the most impregnated with the different phases of the rich history and culture of this crossroad of civilizations, and one of the most active countries in the interplay of cultures and events among the peoples of the region and beyond. The successive ruling powers in Tunisia, fully aware of the importance of this regional space, its correlation with their history and its role as a bridge for cooperation and concord among peoples and nations, ave always given a special attention to the multi-regional dimensions of Tunisia as a Mediterranian, Arab and African country, in its external relations.
