Africa is a continent of land wars and land-based conflicts, from labour strife to governmental coups d'état. However, of the many nations with Atlantic and Indian Ocean or Mediterranean Sea coastlines, maritime security requires standing navies. Maritime security is particularly significant for Africa's island nations. ACM spoke about crime, piracy and terrorism on the high seas and other aspects of conflict off Africa's 26,000 km-long coastline with retired Dutch Marine Colonel Marco Hekkens, who now serves as a freelance consultant on security affairs.
