Abstract:

Despite legislation in Morocco and Tunisia protecting freedom of expression and the press, journalists working for traditional media outlets and activists posting on social media are both confronting increasingly repressive tactics, including arrests, imprisonment, and heavy fines. Freedom House, an American organisation monitoring democratic practices worldwide, awarded 'free and independent media' 1/4 to Morocco and 2/4 to Tunisia in 2020, 1 though Morocco was categorised as 'partly free' and Tunisia 'free'.
