Abstract:

Although the world we live in is three-dimensional, much of the information we receive is limited to two dimensions on pages and screens. This gap between the physical and digital realms limits our leveraging capabilities in optimizing data usefulness. Augmented reality offers a solution to this problem via superimposing digital information and images on physical objects. By placing data directly within the context in which it will be applied, augmented reality enables us to absorb and act on the data more quickly. Many entities currently use augmented reality to improve training, quality, and productivity, thereby significantly increasing value creation. Key implementation questions include what hardware and software are required, how the applications will recognize physical environments, and which development capabilities will be needed.
