World population prospects : The 2000 Revision

This volume presents the analytical report for World Population Prospects: The 2000 Revision, the official United Nations population estimates and projections. The analytical report is the third volume of a three-volume set; the earlier two published volumes provide the comprehensive tables(1) and the sex and age distribution (2) of the population of all countries of the world. Two CD-ROMs containing the results of the 2000 Revision population estimates and projections are also available for purchase. A description of the data sets contained in each and an order form appear at the end of this volume. The 2000 Revision is these seventeenth round of global demographic estimates ad projections undertaken by the Population division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat. Between 1951 and 1998, following an early attempt in the 1940s, 16 rounds of population estimates were published: in 1951, 1954, 1957, 1963, 1968, 1973, 1978, 1980, 1982, 1984, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1995, 1998 and 2000. Responsibility for this Revision rests with the Population division. The 2000 Revision was facilitated to a great extent, however, by close collaboration between the Population Division and the regional commissions and the specialized agencies. The Population Division is also grateful to the Statistics Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs for its continuing cooperation.
