The Organization for Social Science Research in Eastern Africa (OSSREA) is a sub-regional organization dedicated to the encouragement and promotion of study and research in the Social Sciences. OSSREA came into being in April 1980 by unanimous decision of scholars from various countries in the region who met at Nazareth, Ethiopia, for the annual meeting of what was known as the Eastern African Social Science Consultation Group Workshop (EASSCG). It also organizes a number of workshops and congresses that address issues of relevance to the area. The workshops have proved useful forums for comparing notes and exchanging experience among scholars of the region as well as "seeking means of improving the qualities of teaching and research in the Social Sciences in Eastern Africa.
