Digital Government in the Electoral Process: Implications for Elections in Nigeria
Digital Government in the Electoral Process: Implications for Elections in Nigeria
The demand for the improvement in the electoral process in Nigeria is premised on the view that it would reduce the manipulation of the system and make the votes count. The improvement is also to expand the scope of participation and inspire confidence that will ultimately make elections credible and ensure that government is accountable to the people. This paper, drawing largely from documented sources, examined the degree of the adoption of digital government in the management of the electoral process. The paper also identified implications for election credibility in Nigeria. The paper equally examined the various kinds of information and communication technologies deployed by the electoral management bodies in Nigeria and how these have impacted the conduct of elections. The paper concluded that, though there is a visible improvement in the electoral process in the country, there is a need for more investment in infrastructure to enhance digital government on the electoral process.
