Abstract:

This survey of community attitudes and perceptions towards firearms in Tanzania seeks to highlight three main themes: the nature and extent of firearm proliferation in the country, the manifestation of firearms and the capacity and dynamics of Tanzanian communities to respond. The survey found wide support for improving and tightening controls on firearms. As the first national survey of its type conducted in Africa, the results present a broad map that will help the Tanzanian government, non-governmental actor and others to identify and address the challenges posed by firearms in the country.
