Internal Security Operations and Curtailment of Insecurity in Nigeria
Security challenges have been a major obstacle confronting the entire world, and Nigeria is not an exemption. The farmers-herders conflict in a number of Nigerian states has worsened the country's security situation. This situation is worrisome because the Nigerian government has put in place multiplicity of security agencies to curtail internal and external security threats. It is evident that the internal security threats have outpaced the internal security operations of the military and the police. Following on from this assumption, this study examined the efforts of multiple security agencies in the domestic security environment. Descriptive research designs were adopted in which data obtained were analysed using a qualitative analysis method. The study found that the collaborative efforts of individuals, groups, and religious and political leaders have significantly contributed to the internal security situation in Nigeria. Also, emerging internal security threats in Nigeria such as kidnapping, hostage and ransom-taking, illegal migration, discrimination, and the proliferation of small arms and light weapons (SALW) have had a significant negative effect on the internal operations of security agencies. This study recommended good governance and accountability, good political leadership and adequate motivation of security personnel towards effective tackling of security challenges in Nigeria.
